Accommodation overview: Glassonby Old Hall details
Glassonby Old Hall is a Grade II listed, 5 Star Gold Award winning traditional long house. It is one of three luxury retreats in Glassonby, Cumbria, the other two properties being Elk Cottage (CU041) and Jenny's Croft (CU042) which adjoin Glassonby Old Hall, all three properties dating back to the 1600's. The recent renovation brings the Cumbrian retreats back into habitation for the first time since 1764. These holiday cottages retain many of their original features including old ship timber oak beams, oak mullion windows, flagged stone floors, open fires and stone staircases. All three properties are furnished throughout with antiques and incorporate solar water heating.
Though Hall Farm is no longer a working farm, its position on one of the higher hills in the Eden Valley gives it amazing views towards the Pennines and the rolling countryside that has seen this area in Cumbria declared one of the UK's designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Glassonby is located about nine miles from Junction 40 off of the M6 and is easily reached by taxi from the station in the historic market town of Penrith (three hours train journey time from London).
Glassonby Old Hall is in an ideal location for an outdoor break in Cumbria, with numerous walks nearby leading to Lacey's Caves along the Eden River, to the Long Meg Stone Circle (the second largest in England) and to the charming nearby Cumbrian village of Melmerby, where the nationally acclaimed organic Village Bakery and the Shepherd's Inn Pub provide great food and local beers (Dorris' 90th Birthday ale is highly recommended). There is a village shop 1.5 miles from Glassonby, in Kirkoswald which also has two local pubs. Bicycles, locks and helmets are available for hire on site. Cycling route maps are provided and Glassonby is located along the popular C2C cycle route as well as having many quiet lanes in the local area which are ideal for cyclists.
The Cumbrian hamlet of Glassonby is eight miles from Ullswater, one of England's most beautiful lakes, where there are steam cruises from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding, fabulous hikes up Helvellyn, chances to walk and paddle in the National Trust Aira Force Waterfall, pony treks from Rookin House Farm and canoes and sailboats available to hire from the Glenridding Sailing Centre. When done playing in the Lake District National Park, visitors can enjoy a leisurely meal on the shoreline of Lake Ullswater at the Sharrow Bay Hotel, which serves award-winning cuisine.
