Accommodation overview: Less than a 5 minute walk down the hill to the safe sandy beach at Porth, this recently upgraded 19th century mid terrace stone cottage is ideal for family holidays and within easy reach of all the activities that Newquay has to offer about a mile away.
Offering a comfortable and well equipped home from home at any time of the year with gas central heating and an open fire, Cockle Cottage is set on the North Coast of Cornwall yet still in a central position perfect as a touring base for exploring the whole county.
Approached from the parking area where there is space for two cars, one in a lockable garage, a pedestrian gate and a dozen open sided steps lead down through the landscaped garden to the entrance at the rear. A half glazed door opens to a modern fully fitted kitchen with a quarry tiled floor, smart dining suite, additional breakfast bar and patio doors to the front courtyard providing a short cut to the beach.
At the rear, an inner hallway gives access to the warm and cosy sitting room with a high painted beam ceiling and sumptuous lounge seating facing the brick fireplace with open fire.
Carpeted stairs lead up from the hall to the first floor landing where there is a fully tiled bathroom W.C. with hand basin and shower over the bath and two delightful bedrooms in a fresh crisp décor. The master bedroom has a 5ft king-size bed, dual aspect windows and a couple of easy chairs in one corner for reading, relaxing and watching television, and the second bedroom has twin beds.
To the rear of the property is a fully enclosed terraced garden with a sheltered paved patio and raised gravel terrace with garden furniture. The South West Coast Path and the large sandy beach offering easy access and safe bathing at Porth are just 300 yards down the hill with a pub and seasonal shop just a little further.
Newquay’s local shops, pubs and restaurants are a 10 minute walk and the resort centre with a wider selection of amenities including a zoo, Sea Life Aquarium and cinema is about a 20 minute walk away or one mile by car. There are several other beaches in the Newquay area within easy reach including Watergate Bay (home to Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Restaurant), Lusty Glaze, Tolcarne and Fistral, to name but a few.
Golf, horse riding and ten pin bowling are all available nearby as is coarse fishing at Porth Reservoir and there is a local bus service operating to Newquay, Watergate Bay, Mawgan Porth and Padstow.

The small village of Prixford lies less than half an hour's drive from the wonderful North Devon Coastline and a choice of superb beaches. The surrounding countryside with rolling hills and wooded valleys offers miles of paths for walking, riding or cycling and there is a good choice of golf courses nearby. If you like to take your country pursuits closer to home, the spring fed carp and trout ponds at the bottom of the garden provide a perfect spot for a little fishing. Fabulous Marwood Hill Gardens is within a ten minute walk, and if you visit on a Sunday be sure to try the delicious cream tea in Marwood Church Hall. Part of the farmhouse dates back to 1684 and it has been sympathetically extended and restored to feature flagstone floors, exposed stone walls and beams, natural wood doors and oak flooring. The huge family kitchen / breakfast room is light and bright with fitted units, slate worktops and an attractive decorative stone fireplace, a really special place to gather the family for leisurely breakfasts while planning the day ahead. Trencreek Farmhouse is a superbly appointed detached Grade II Listed Farmhouse set in 7 acres of fields and surrounded by beautiful countryside, ten minutes from the sheltered waters of the south Cornish coast.
This luxury self catering property is 3 miles from the village of Tregony with its shop, pub, farm shop, post office and art gallery and 3 miles from the picturesque village of Veryan. There are some half dozen excellent restaurants and pubs around 10 minutes away. The garden is a haven for children who want to nature spot or build dens and the property benefits from a full sized table tennis table in the adjacent barn.
The Cornish coast nearby offers three fine sandy beaches: Caerhays Beach is just under three miles and the National Trust beaches of Carne and Pendower (together a mile long sandy beach and good rock pooling) are only 4 miles away. The water at Carne and Pendower is particularly good for swimming (you may even spot a seal! ) and the beaches have excellent rock pools.
The village of Tregony is on the Roseland Peninsula, one of the most unspoilt areas of Cornwall and very popular with walkers and those seeking an outdoor break. There are riding stables and tennis courts at Veryan and, of course, sailing, as well as a fine range of galleries and restaurants at St Mawes (9 miles). Fishing trips and chartered outings can be arranged in St Mawes.Fishing trips are available at St Mawes.
Trencreek Farmhouse is ideally situated for exploring the many delights of this area of Cornwall. Places to visit include the cathedral city of Truro (11 miles). Newquay airport is easily accessible. Caerhays Castle Garden is particularly worth a visit in early Spring and hosts a National Collection of Magnolias. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are also within easy reach and are worth visiting year round. Slightly further afield are Rick Stein's various restaurants in Padstow, Jamie Oliver's new Fifteen Cornwall in Watergate Bay, the Maritime Museum in Falmouth and St Ives with its many restaurants and The Tate Gallery. There are a number of National Trust properties and Gardens nearby. The nearest being Trelissick Garden and Trerice Manor. The property is located in Thomas Hardy country in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just outside the pretty village of Hooke and a short drive away from the small town of Beaminster and the beaches and cliffs of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.
There are excellent walks and cycle rides across the West Dorset countryside directly from the property, with the Iron Age Fort of Eggardon Hill and the nature reserves of Kingcombe and Powerstock Common all nearby, along with many other historic towns and villages. The barn is located on a working sheep farm and guests are welcome to meet and help look after the animals.
A number of good pubs are within a 10 minute drive away such as The Three Horseshoes at Powerstock and the Acorn at Evershot. Also within a 10 minute drive are plenty of local services and conveniences found in either Maiden Newton or Beaminster.
