With direct access to breathtaking cliffs and waterfall at Spekes Mill Mouth overlooking a secluded sand and rocky beach enjoyed by reef surfers and amateur prawn crab and lobster fishermen. Hartland is 3 miles away offering a choice of pubs shops and a Post Office. Places of interest nearby include Clovelly with its cobbled streets and Sandymouth over the border in Cornwall with 2 miles of sandy beach and rolling Atlantic waves. Hartland Quay with its museum and history of wreckers and shipwrecks remains of which can still be found around the rocky beaches of Hartland Point. Other attractions such as The Big Sheep and The Milky Way offer excellent family entertainment and adjacent to the property is Docton MiIl famous for its cream teas and award winning garden. Leisure facilities: the property s own grounds offer diversity with paths bridges lawns woodland and a large log seating area around a camp fire (weather permitting). The grounds lead down to an unfenced stream (children beware) where wild brown trout can be caught. There is also a mill pond 200 yards from the house which fills in rainy weather and is also unfenced. Accommodation overview: Long Meadow Barn details
Long Meadow Barn is a charming, spacious detached converted barn set in the rural village of Down St. Mary. It is the ideal safe rural retreat set within its own garden and yet within easy access of Crediton or Exeter. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking, cycling and golf with Waterbridge Golf Course less than a mile away. The Two Moors Way runs through Down St. Mary as do a variety of public footpaths. Fishing is also available locally.
There are numerous local country pubs in the surrounding villages, the nearest being The Devonshire Dumpling 1/2 mile away, a short stroll, which serves excellent food. Copplestone, a mile away, features a general store and post office where provisions can be bought. Crediton is seven miles away where there are Indian restaurants which provide home delivery, Chinese takeaways, a leisure centre with public swimming pool, a large Tesco and a smaller Morrisons.
The village of Zeal Monachorum, a couple of miles away, boasts a pub and a small leisure centre that offers an indoor swimming pool, as well as an extensive renowned indoor and outdoor children's play area suitable for all ages which is perfect for those rainy days, skittles, snooker, all of which will entertain the whole family, as well as good food.
Dartmoor National Park is approximately 10 miles away with breathtaking scenery where you can walk and explore the countryside and heritage sites. There are also National Trust properties to explore within easy driving distance such as Castle Drogo, Rosemoor and Knighthayes which offer beautiful gardens and an interesting house. From Morchard Road station,which is 1/2 mile away, the Tarka Line trains run offering lots of walks from a number of stations en route.
Within a short 40 minute drive, there are gorgeous sandy beaches on both the north and south coasts offering sailing, excellent surfing and other water sports. Alternatively, the historic cathedral city of Exeter, 5 miles away, boasts fantastic shopping and numerous excellent restaurants. The Manger was once a stable. Its original stalls, hay rack, troughs and loft have been retained and the necessary modern additions to create a luxury holiday cottage have been gently inserted. The loft stair allows an open aspect through to the apex of the roof. There are lime-washed walls and gentle lighting. The terrace offers uninterrupted views down to the river and stretching several miles along and across the spectacular Yarty River valley with its pattern of small irregular fields and copses.
Enveloped by accessible woodlands, apple orchards and farm fields, The Manger lies at the end of a long,shared drive, amidst hedge-lined winding lanes. Badgers, deer,rabbits, (40 species of moth were counted on a June evening) and various birds of prey are commonly seen. A weir pool with a salmon ladder lies along one of the many footpaths nearby and a bluebell wood is a short walk away. Within five miles there are three superb local family run farm shops, the River Cottage Canteen, and a choice of nearby pubs renowned for good food and beer.
