Dating back to 1860 this pretty stone built, semi-detached, cottage is set in an elevated position, at the edge of the beautiful village of Axmouth in East Devon. The cottage is comprehensively equipped to provide very comfortable accommodation for four adults and two children. Nestled in a picturesque valley less than a mile from the coast, Hillside is situated in a rural location with pleasant views of the surrounding countryside. The only sounds to be heard in this peaceful spot are the gushing stream at the front of the house and the abundant wildlife. The perfect setting for your Devon cottage holidays.
The cottage is elevated above the laneway and is approached via steps leading to the front door. Downstairs there is a hall, living room with wood burning stove, kitchen/dining room, laundry cupboard and a large power shower room with WC. Upstairs there is a double room, a twin bedroom, a bunk room and family bathroom with large bath and power shower over. Outside there is a formal garden to the front of the cottage and a patio to the rear with steps rising to an area of decking and a picnic table with parasol for outside dining. The garden rises to reveal panoramic views across the valley. A small stone shed houses further outdoor seating and a barbecue. There is private parking for up to two cars adjacent to the cottage and further parking available 50 yards along the lane.
Axmouth village has two very good pubs, The Ship and The Harbour, both of which serve excellent food. The River Axe is within walking distance as is Axmouth Beach at about a mile away. Lyme Regis is around 5 miles to the East, whilst the fishing village of Beer is a few miles west. A large supermarket is around 1 mile away at Seaton, which also boasts the famous Seaton Tramway. The area is very popular with both cyclists and walkers and the nearest golf course is also less than a mile away. River Cottage HQ and the original River Cottage Canteen are within a few miles drive.

Nestling in a tranquil wooded valley leading down to the sea, nature lovers will be enthralled by the canopy of ancient trees and the abundance of ferns and wild flowers. Approached via a narrow track of just over one third of a mile - unsuitable for low suspension or extra wide vehicles - it adjoins the owners own holiday cottage, just used occasionally. The cosy living room with inglenook has a wood burning stove, lovely at any time of year. The modern breakfast kitchen features a slate tiled floor complimented by granite style worktops and is well equipped for all your needs. From a rear utility room, useful for coats and boots, five steps lead up to the modern family bathroom and an open tread staircase leads to the three bedrooms on the first floor. A spacious double room, a compact twin room and a single room, all have wonderful views and feature deep window sills, and traditional latched board doors. As may be expected in this type of cottage some doorways have low head room. At the side of the cottage a raised patio is ideal for al fresco dining and the sloping and tiered cottage garden, with covered pond, has lots of peaceful spots to relax surrounded only by the sounds of nature. Keen walkers will find endless coastal and country footpaths leading almost from the doorstep, a favourite being the walk to Peppercombe Beach, shown in the photograph, with its unique red cliffs and mini waterfall, pebbles at high tide give way to a lovely sandy inlet with interesting rock pools and beach fishing at low tide. In an unforgettable and unique location Peppercombe Holt is just perfect for a truly get away from it all holiday at any time of year. Long Meadow Barn is a charming, spacious detached converted barn set in the rural village of Down St. Mary. It is the ideal safe rural retreat set within its own garden and yet within easy access of Crediton or Exeter. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking, cycling and golf with Waterbridge Golf Course less than a mile away. The Two Moors Way runs through Down St. Mary as do a variety of public footpaths. Fishing is also available locally.
There are numerous local country pubs in the surrounding villages, the nearest being The Devonshire Dumpling 1/2 mile away, a short stroll, which serves excellent food. Copplestone, a mile away, features a general store and post office where provisions can be bought. Crediton is seven miles away where there are Indian restaurants which provide home delivery, Chinese takeaways, a leisure centre with public swimming pool, a large Tesco and a smaller Morrisons.
The village of Zeal Monachorum, a couple of miles away, boasts a pub and a small leisure centre that offers an indoor swimming pool, as well as an extensive renowned indoor and outdoor children's play area suitable for all ages which is perfect for those rainy days, skittles, snooker, all of which will entertain the whole family, as well as good food.
Dartmoor National Park is approximately 10 miles away with breathtaking scenery where you can walk and explore the countryside and heritage sites. There are also National Trust properties to explore within easy driving distance such as Castle Drogo, Rosemoor and Knighthayes which offer beautiful gardens and an interesting house. From Morchard Road station,which is 1/2 mile away, the Tarka Line trains run offering lots of walks from a number of stations en route.
Within a short 40 minute drive, there are gorgeous sandy beaches on both the north and south coasts offering sailing, excellent surfing and other water sports. Alternatively, the historic cathedral city of Exeter, 5 miles away, boasts fantastic shopping and numerous excellent restaurants. Sightseeing tours are available or you can explore the Cathedral, underground passages or visit the Northcott Theatre or cinema.
